Drapery Love

Window treatments finish a space. I especially love them in my home.

Check out my new drapery.

The fabric is by Dwell Studio for Robert Allen and is called “Medallion Band” in citrine.

Thanks Tonic Living for another gorgeous job.

Now I just need decorative pillows and a new area rug to finish the space off!

Entertain Me Movies: A New Store!

I love seeing a new business come to life.

A new movie rental store called Entertain Me Movies recently opened in Aurora and I had the pleasure of working on the design and implementation. The store has a family focus – it rents movies for all ages and has a particularly large kids section. The owners wanted a store that was bright and cheerful and reflected the colours in their logo.

I used these images as inspiration for the design – bright, light and airy with hits of colour throughout:

We started with this design board:

And from there created a space that was a mix of green, blue and white on the walls, a striped vinyl tile application on the floor and a light, streamlined counter area. The owner Jen had amazing ideas for the space including a wall of movie quotes and a popcorn machine. Check it out!

This project had a quick turnaround – two months from my initial meeting to the store opening! So exciting to see design come to life so quickly!

The store has been open for a month now and is serving a void in the area left by the closing of two major movie stores. If you live in the Aurora or Newmarket area be sure to check it out – it’s on Bayview in the Sobey’s plaza!

What do you think? What was the last movie you saw?

My Shed: Even Pigs Need Lipstick

I can distinctly recall the conversation my husband and I had when we moved into our current house. The only thing on his “must have” list was a garage. Well … I think he caved when pressured by his then pregnant wife and didn’t hold his ground. Because not only did we not end up with a garage. We ended up with a “shed”. Small, sort of run down and in need of some TLC.

We have since decided to expand our shed – next year. In the meantime we had a party at our house last weekend and I knew that I couldn’t have sixty people standing on my deck with the f-ugly shed glaring down at us.

Here’s what we started with:

Last summer we fixed up the door (so that it actually opened), reshingled the roof (which massively cleaned it up!) and replaced the fascia board.

Then winter hit and painting our little shed didn’t happen.

Until I had a deadline … yep. We had a backyard party and I got busy with the paintbrush and applied some grey and raspberry lipstick to the pig (I mean, shed).

Pretty good huh? Unfortunately I ran out of time pre-party and didn’t get to painting the fascia board or the trim around the door and window (it was meant to be painted black). Fortunately no one noticed and someone even commented on how pretty the shed is! I’d declare that a success.

I got slightly busted by the group that was hanging out on the grass … oops … missed a side!

Let’s just take a look at where we started and where we are today shall we?

Definitely an improvement I’d say! Amazing what a coat of paint can do!

Do you have any projects that just need a quick coat of lipstick to class them up?!

Monday Kitchen & Winners

Happy Monday! Here’s a pic of a kitchen for you to drool over. I quite like all the texture in the space including the wicker kitchen chairs, the lattice detail on the cabinetry and the wood beams on the ceiling. What do you think?

A Boardroom Swing

In the right office culture this is a pretty cool concept for a boardroom table and chairs. Designed and manufactured by British design firm Duffy London the swinging boardroom table is definitely unique.

That being said … I could see a meeting rapidly getting out of control as attendees get their swing on. I have enough trouble controlling my foot tapping!

What do you think?

A Peek at The FABulous Princess Margaret Showhome

Last week I had the pleasure of attending a blogger preview of the Princess Margaret Showhome in Oakville. Designed by Lynda Reeves and her team the home has a modern yet rustic feel to it.

The stone exterior flanked by board and batten siding give nod to the history of the neighbourhood while the dark grey siding and black windows and doors add a flair of modern elegance to the home. I have been obsessed with black windows lately so I was drooling before even entering the house!

The landscaping creates the feel of a country estate with a pergola connecting the garage to the main house and paver stones laid to create a patio in the back garden.

The house has an open feel to it as one room flows easily to the next. Every detail is carefully curated. Be it how a room was accessorized, the finishing details on the furniture or the tile detail in the bathrooms every element worked together to create a home that is open, bright and calm.

One of the standout features for me of the Showhome was the ceramic work in the bathrooms. The tile was in keeping with the neutral, calm colour scheme but utilized pattern, texture and scale to impress. I’m a huge sucker for a herringbone pattern and it was used in several applications.

The kitchen was full of marble goodness.

I loved the shelving nook for firewood. Decorative and functional.

I was dying to get my inner Ohmmm on in this yoga room!

There were so many wonderful details to absorb. The Showhome is now open to the public and I highly recommend checking it out. Many thanks to the House & Home team for inviting me!

And, while you are at it buy a ticket to the Princess Margaret Sweepstakes – Help Conquer Cancer in our lifetime!

Fall Projects & A Giveaway!

Fall has definitely arrived.

Kids have started their second week back at school, activities are in full swing and I have been a machine around the house trying to restore order after the chaos of summer holidays.

September has always been a month of new beginnings for me. I remember the first few years of working after graduating university I felt like I should be going back to school or starting something new after Labour Day.

One project around the house that will satisfy me to no end is to figure out how to get the kid crap under control. This includes a creating a landing spot for school notices, sports equipment, library books and all the little artwork “treasures”. With three kids in various activities creating a wall calendar for the week is key to ensure everyone knows who is going where. My goal is to have this more or less in place this week. If I don’t I might never surface under the mountain of stuff!

Once I have restored order to the house we can start tackling other projects on our list! Things like ….

– creating functional storage in my older boys shared room (they currently call the closet a dressing room – intelligent storage is non-existent!).

– third floor washroom mini-re-do (combine better functionality for storage with a lot of pretty … right now it’s a horror show!)

– backyard shed (we want to expand it – this is likely a spring project but will take the winter to map out a plan)

– maybe a little master bedroom zhush?!

I will keep you posted with the progress. The list will likely get updated as we go but here’s a start!

One of the places I like to go for inspiration on home projects is the Fall Home Show.

In addition to a variety of exhibitors there is also a great line-up of speakers covering everything from renovation planning, to colour inspiration to maximizing your renovation dollar. This year the Fall Home Show runs from September 20-23 at the Better Living Centre in Exhibition Place.

I’ve got two pairs of tickets up for grabs to anyone living in the GTA. To be eligible simply leave me a comment telling me what projects you have going on for your home this fall! Contest closes at noon EST on Saturday September 15th.

So there you have it … some insight into what projects I’ve got coming up around my house and a chance to win a pair of tickets to the Fall Home Show.

Happy Monday!
